Makassar, December 2016
PERDIK, a Disabled People’s Organisation from Makassar, Sulawesi, celebrated International Day of Persons with Disability in a very special way: They organised an expedition to climb up 3478 meter high Latimojong mountain in South Sulawesi! Two PERDIK members with a physical disability and one member with a visual impairment took part in this adventure, supported by volunteers and experienced mountain climbers, since Latimojong is not an easy target to tackle! The path leads through tropical mountain forest, which is often covered in thick clouds and mist, especially during rainy season in December.
“The top of the mountain was not our goal”, says Ishak Salim from PERDIK, “but to raise awareness about the discrimination and the barriers that still exist in the lifes of people with disabilities”. AccessibleIndonesia congratulates the group of mountaineers and hopes that mountain climbing in Indonesia will become increasingly possible for people with disability!
