Bali, July 2019
On July 15 we had an appointment with the Legian Beach Management in Bali. The beach is part of Bali’s life – traditional Bali Hindu rules apply. The management tries to reconcile the economically important “tourist rules” harmoniously. The purpose of our visit was to raise awareness about the importance of beach access for wheelchair users and to discuss options. Legian Beach is the most famous beach in all Indonesia. It has beautiful white sand, but that is the tricky part for wheelchair-using guests.
Our appointment was arranged with the help of Legian Beach Hotel, which also has an interest in making holiday for disabled guests even better. The initial push came from Steffi Raila from Behindertengerechte Reisen during her visit to Bali. Pak Gede from the Village Relation department of the hotel was there. Our small interest group consisted of AccessibleIndonesia, Wheelchair Travelers and Bali Beach Wheelchair. In the beginning, the discussion was a bit slow, but after a while the head of Legian Beach Management came up with ideas and made plans for the future. He said the important words: “We need that!” So a first step. It will take a while, but we will continue and hope for a nice wooden path on the white Legian sand – for all!
